| Welcome
to the Glass Studio |
 |
| Employing the techniques
of the old masters and new ones of their own, the
highly-skilled artisans of our studio produce blown
glass pieces that express the sensibilities of today
while honoring the rich glass-blowing heritage of
the past. |
|
   |
The work performed in our
glass studio requires strenuous effort, at dangerously
close to extreme temperatures (often over 2,400 degrees
F). Working as a team, each person has to perform
with precision and a deft touch, being especially
careful not to burn the others.
The working of hot glass begins
with a furnace, 'the tank', holding several hundred
pounds of molten glass. About the consistency of honey,
the glass is picked up, or 'gathered', on a hollow
steel blowpipe, and manipulated while still soft into
the forms desired. It can be made to take virtually
any form, literally an infinite number of possible
shapes. |
|
   |
Using a few simple tools
and the heat from a secondary furnace each piece is
coaxed from the amorphous blob of glowing heat. The
work is taxing, both mentally and physically. It gets
HOT! The primary function of one team member may be
to act as a heat shield to protect the gaffer (the
one who wields the pipe)
It is through the combined
talents of this team that the larger of our works
are created. The pieces are designed and manufactured
entirely by hand, and in extremely limited editions,
each one finished, signed and dated by Larry Newsum.
